Start with the job, not the feature list
Every platform demo looks the same. Drag and drop builder, automation canvas, a dashboard with a line going up. What separates them is the job they were built for, and that is the first thing you should decide about yourself.
There are really three jobs. Publishing a newsletter and growing an audience. Driving revenue from a store. Running sales automation against a pipeline. Platforms that are excellent at one of these are usually average at the other two, and the ones that claim all three tend to cost more and ask you to configure your way there.
- Newsletter and audience. Simple sends, clean subscriber management, growth tools. See our Kit review and Beehiiv review.
- Ecommerce revenue. Product data, abandoned cart, post purchase flows. See our Klaviyo review and Mailchimp review.
- Sales automation. Lead scoring, CRM sync, conditional logic. See our ActiveCampaign review and HubSpot review.
Size your list, then price it at double
Almost every platform prices on contacts, sends, or both. The mistake I see most often is pricing a platform at today's list size and discovering the tier above it is where the real money starts. Model your cost at twice your current contacts before you sign anything.
If you are still under a thousand subscribers, start free and keep the switching cost low. Our free email marketing software guide covers the six plans worth using and where each cap bites.
Automation depth is the thing you cannot bolt on later
Templates you can fix. Design you can fix. Automation logic is the part that decides whether you can build a welcome sequence that branches on behavior, or whether you are stuck sending the same three emails to everyone.
Ask one question during the trial: can I trigger an email from something a subscriber did, not just something they filled in? If the answer involves an upgrade, factor that upgrade into your price.
Check integrations before you commit
A native integration syncs behavior and purchase data. A Zapier bridge usually syncs contacts and nothing else, costs extra, and breaks quietly. Our platform integrations guide breaks down which platforms connect natively to stores, CRMs, and analytics tools.
Test deliverability while it is still free
Send real campaigns during the trial. Check where they land across Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo. Set up authentication properly first, because a platform cannot rescue an unauthenticated domain. Our email deliverability guide walks through SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and sender warmup.
Then look at the ranking
Once you know the job, the budget, and the integrations, the shortlist gets short fast. Our best email marketing software hub has the scored rankings by use case, and our Kit vs Mailchimp comparison shows how two different philosophies play out on the same list.
If you are already on a platform and moving off it, read the platform migration guide before you cancel anything.
